Joe’s life is divided into 3+1 chapters. Chapter I: 25+ years in business including Estate Planning with New York Life, Revenue Officer with the U.S. Treasury Department, Sales Representative and gas main Extension King with Washington Natural Gas Company, Real Estate Broker, investor, developer, and property manager. Chapter II: 25 years in public service as a Pierce County Deputy Sheriff between the ages of 45 and 70. Chapter III: Began with an April Fool’s Day 2013 retirement and involves The Arts including Writing, Comedy, and the Blues. Currently Joe is a creator on Westside Story, The Benny's & Joey’s Quiz with Publisher Ben Sclair and Double Take with author / columnist Susanne Bacon. Joe has performed as an actor locally and done stand-up comedy in Seattle, Tacoma, New Jersey, and Las Vegas. Chapter +1 (or 4) finds Joe and his family leaving Washington state after 77 year of residency to the Westside of the Atlantic Ocean in a state named Delaware. Because Joe has left many friends in western Washington, he remains interested in the territory of his former Westside Story beat.

Westside Story – US Open Breeds Greed

I love business and capitalism for all kinds of reasons, but when you add the element of greed to business, I have nothing but disdain for those responsible for giving capitalism a black eye.

A few days ago an incident involving cut-throat capitalism was reported in TV news and print media. It was reported that Mr. Abdulaziz Karim (AKA Aziz), a local business owner and landlord, appears to be using business practices to force at least two families out of their homes in order to make giant bucks renting his homes to B.T.O.s (Big Time Operators) associated with the 2015 US Open Championship. He stands to make $38,000 per house during the US Open Championship in June, 2015.

Last week I took my grandchildren, ages 5 and 8, to the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, Washington.

While walking through the zoo, my grandchildren, (who are both built much closer to the ground than I am), found a fitbit zip in the middle of the walkway. Finding a fitbit is like finding $60.

Every day we are bombarded with Bad Cop stories. Most of these stories, at their basic foundation, are faulty stories. In this avalanche of Bad Cop stories, there are a few accurate stories. There has to be, because bad people are everywhere including law enforcement, teachers, doctors and ministers.

Westside Story – A Story From Hell

Have you ever had someone tell you to go to Hell? I have, especially when I was dealing with unhappy criminals. Most criminals are unhappy, especially those who belong to the Felons Club. I remember one, in particular, who told me to go to Hell and then tried to burn me in the face with his lit cigarette. As you might imagine, I made arrangements for him to spend a few days and nights in a non-smoking facility. I guess his threat was not an idle threat. He told me to go to Hell and to Hell I went. At least most of us would think of the Pierce County Jail as a kind of Hell. When he told me to go to Hell, he did not count on my taking him with me.

Westside Story – Kiwanis – Lakewood First Lions Skate Park

I remember back in the late 90s when I was with the Lakewood Police Department, a proposal surfaced to build a skate park. It was thought a skate park would provide our youth with healthy, safe and legal activity where they could hang out with friends and expend some of the teenage energy that we all wish we still had. Some of our local youth made an organized effort to communicate to our Lakewood City Council their support for building a skate park. Our city council listened and then took action. Isn’t that great? Kids talk and adults listen. Kids and adults working together to make our city a better place to live, work and play. Lakewood is a kid friendly city.
