Hey everybody, I have included two fun photos of scenes I found in our community. I share them with you as a reminder that Saturday, October 31, 2015, is Halloween. Kids will be roaming all over our community looking for Halloween treats. I know you know that. You also know to be extra careful when driving so as to not run over a trick or treater. Hitting a child with a car will ruin our days for a long time to come, regardless of who’s fault the collision might be.
Westside Story – Starbucks Name Change
I loved Starbucks for over 25 years, traveling to what was known as the 3rd Place twice a day anywhere I might be located all over the world. Howard Schultz successfully imported an idea from Europe and perfected his dream he called the 3rd Place.
Letter: Today’s news need not be tomorrow’s
A local chapter of a national health organization wanted to know what benefit it would receive for sponsoring our community seven-and-eight-year-old baseball team, all from the first and second grades of Tillicum Elementary School.
I was thinking about my answer as I read recent headlines.
Westside Story – Relax at the Beach
While we are all a part of the same USA, we do not all behave the same. For instance on the West Coast we call soft drinks pop. On the East Coast they call soft drinks soda.
Westside Story – Uncle Melvin’s Bike
My photo of Uncle Melvin’s bike gives new meaning to the word recycling. I have shown you this bike before in different seasons including winter when it was covered with snow. I thought you might enjoy the bike in its current state.

Westside Story – Educated Fool
Did you read the recent article in the News Tribune and The Suburban Times where political candidate, Ben Gonter, promotes the idea that having a four year college degree should be mandatory for a political candidate to be properly qualified to serve in pubic office?
Letter: Living for the picture and not the prize
We were approaching mud hens – hundreds of them – bunched in front of our double flatwater racing shell during our twice-a-week father-daughter early morning workout.
It was the third of our four-mile race against the clock, ever seeking faster times – struggling, straining, sprinting all while exhausting long-since spent resources yet even still digging deeper, rowing harder, with some success but mostly not.
Westside Story – Reading Can Be Dangerous
We hear it all the time. “Read with your child.” “Become a volunteer reader at your school to help children learn to read.” “Stamp out illiteracy, by helping adults learn to read.”
I found an interesting warning sign at BROWSEBOUT BOOKS, a bookstore in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, which helps reinforce my point. I have depicted the sign in Photo 1 below.
