The Rotary Club of Tacoma got more than they had bargained for by booking David Mikkelson, Founder/Executive Editor of Snopes.com as the program for the 28th of February meeting at the Tacoma Yacht Club. When it looked like Mikkelson would not make the meeting, Doreen Marchionni the Managing Editor at Snopes.com stepped in as the program speaker. By the time the meeting was called to order, however, the Rotary Club had both experts for the program.
The meeting brought in Rotary members from Lakewood, Tacoma North Rotary, and Gig Harbor (Mid-Day). Also a group of non-Rotarians joined the audience from Lakewood after reading a previous article about the event in The Suburban Times.
Mikkelson and Marchionni commented about an important event like President Trump’s ex-attorney telling-all before the U.S. Congress the day before the meeting and yet people still asked questions about the Momo Challenge and news of a giant snake. Snopes chooses stories to follow based on audience queries. Marchionni pointed out that Snopes doesn’t cover the news, “That’s why god made the Washington Post and the New York Times.” Snopes does get some pressure about “alternate facts,” but most people are simply looking for a basic “True” or “False” answer, so they “don’t have to read through a bunch of stuff.” The duo fielded questions from the audience (approximately 130 people). The presentation was both fun, funny, and very, very informative!
