Westside Story – Signs Of The Times

October 9, 2013 By Joe Boyle

UnlockDoor

Story & Photo – Joseph Boyle

As I travel around the country, I get to enjoy some free humor by simply watching signs people post in public places. For example, check out my photo of a sign I found in Mystic, Connecticut.

I am inside the men’s room in the Chamber of Commerce building in downtown Mystic, Connecticut. I have obviously locked the door for privacy. As I make way towards the exit, I see the sign posted on the inside of the door which reads, “Please UNLOCK Door before Leaving”. What is the Chamber afraid of? Are they fearful I will climb out the window, leaving the door locked behind me? Maybe they thought I would hide in the paper towel trash bin and sneak out when the custodian hauled out the trash. I am not going to unlock the door after leaving, because if I take that strategy, I cannot get the door open. I definitely found the sign helpful. Otherwise, I might still be locked in the mens room in Mystic, Connecticut instead of sitting in Lakewood, Washington Starbucks, writing this story.

Maybe past users of this men’s room have neglected to unlock the door when they left, thus pulling the hardware out of the door and door frame. Could the sign be from a frustrated maintenance worker?

Don’t they have doorknobs in CT? Glad you could figure out the hardware and escape!
