The Suburban Times was founded in 2005 to be a digital version of a community bulletin board. You’ve likely seen old school bulletin boards in town squares, coffee shops, power poles, and schools among other places. They are covered with flyers and business cards thumbtacked or stapled at all sorts of angles.
That is what I designed The Suburban Times to be, but neater.
There are all sorts of events, announcements, and items of interest happening in our communities that don’t get the publicity or awareness they deserve.
I must be doing something right. For example, from June 20-July 19, 2024 more than 65,000 people stopped by this little website and read more than 90,000 stories. Click here if you’d like to see The Suburban Times web analytics for yourself. I use a privacy focused service to track traffic and I am proud to share the traffic data.
Who am I?
My name is Ben Sclair. I founded The Suburban Times and maintain it to this day. I also have a full-time day job (I own/operate an aviation media company). If you are a pilot, you may be interested in General Aviation News. That’s me in the photo, with my friend’s Piper J-3 Cub in the background.
Content you see on The Suburban Times is produced by people in our community. Not me.
The Suburban Times has no editors, photographers, reporters, or salespeople. It’s just me, and as I noted, I have a day job.
My desire is to make it easier for people to connect with others in the community.
How is content published?
Content is submitted via the Share a Story form, the Event Calendar form, emailed to me, or gathered from various newsfeeds I follow.
I don’t write any of the content. I simply aggregate and publish it seven days a week.
I have only two rules, which are subject to change at any time:
- The Suburban Times is a hyper-local news and information site serving western Pierce County in Washington state. Content must be produced by a person in our coverage area or be about someone or something in our coverage area. All other submissions will not be accepted. Anonymous submissions are also not accepted.
- No election, candidate, or ballot related content, of any kind, will be published on The Suburban Times. If you’d like to know why, click here.
If you see something on the website that is similar to something you are part of, feel free to submit your announcement.
Coverage Area
You may be wondering where the coverage area is. I collect and share content from Anderson Island, DuPont, Fircrest, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Lakewood, Parkland, Puyallup, South Hill, Spanaway, Steilacoom, Tacoma, and University Place.
