TACOMA, Wash. – The City of Tacoma is making electric vehicle (EV) use easier and more convenient downtown with a significant expansion of its public charging network. Implemented in partnership with Tacoma Public Utilities, the Office of Environmental Policy and Sustainability’s Downtown EV Charging Expansion Project nearly doubles the number of publicly accessible EV chargers in Tacoma’s downtown core.
There are 21 new chargers across seven City-operated parking lots and garages. Two are located near I-705 for convenient access. Tacoma now has a total of 51 public EV chargers downtown – including 47 Level 2 chargers and two Level 3 DC fast chargers with 13 more scheduled to go live soon – all strategically placed to support broader coverage and enhanced convenience for the public.
“Nearly doubling the number of publicly accessible EV chargers in Tacoma’s downtown core is a major step forward in our commitment to clean transportation and climate resilience,” said Mayor Victoria Woodards. “This expansion not only supports our 2030 electrification goals—it also ensures that downtown remains accessible, future-ready, and welcoming to residents and visitors who are making the switch to electric.”
“By providing more charging options downtown, we are supporting a shift to more sustainable transportation options and helping to make the air we breathe cleaner,” said Council Member Kristina Walker. “This shift is a key to reducing air pollution and reliance on fossil fuels, making Tacoma a healthier place to live, work, and visit.”
Community members are invited to celebrate this clean energy milestone at a “plugging-in” event featuring two of the newly installed DC fast charging stations.
