Personnel at Joint Base Lewis-McChord will be conducting a fall cleanup week from Oct. 28 to Nov. 1, during which they will clear out discarded trash and debris from the installation’s more than 86,000 acres of training grounds.
Ron Grantham, operations officer with JBLM’s Directorate of Plans, Training, Aviation, Mobilization and Security, stated that most of the illegal dumping comes from outside the base. Tires, mattresses, containers filled with motor oil, and even whole abandoned vehicles are among the items that will be removed from JBLM training areas.
The cleanup will also consist of the detonation of unexploded training ordnance within the base’s impact training area. The time of detonation will be determined by JBLM’s Explosive Ordnance Team.
During the week, soldiers and airmen will patrol through the most remote areas of JBLM and along busy highways that flow through training areas to clean up illegally dumped trash and household garbage.
“Everything that we remove is, in my eyes, items that pose a very serious safety risk to the service members out training,” Grantham said. “First and foremost, we want to keep our service members safe, and this is how we accomplish that.”
