On Oct. 9, U.S. Rep. Marilyn Strickland (WA-10), U.P. Mayor Javier Figueroa and Mayor Pro Tem Ed Wood were joined by U.P. City Councilmembers Denise McCluskey, Melanie Grassi and Stan Flemming as well as the Park Commission Chair Amy Wolfe, Vice Chair Alecia Cunningham and Park Commissioner Kristi Jones at the groundbreaking for improvements at Homestead Park.
Plans call for the popular U.P. gathering spot to get new bike racks and playground equipment, ADA-compliant restrooms and drinking fountains, picnic tables and improved lighting.
“The City of University Place is especially grateful to Congresswoman Strickland for her assistance in helping us secure a congressionally directed funding request of $500,000 from the Department of Housing and Urban Development that helped get this project off the ground,” said Figueroa. “But I also thank our citizens who engaged with us through surveys and public meetings to share their visions for what Homestead Park can be.”
Construction on the improvements is expected to extend through 2025.
