TACOMA – Travelers who use northbound Interstate 5 approaching South 56th Street in Tacoma will want to plan for weekend lane closures.
Washington State Department of Transportation crews will close two left lanes of northbound I-5 Sept. 13-15.
Work schedule:
- 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13 until 5 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14
- 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14 until 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 15
What to expect:
- Northbound I-5 reduced to two lanes approaching Exit 130 to South 56th Street and University Place.
- Congestion approaching the work zone during early morning hours.
- Significant congestion approaching the work zone during late morning hours Sunday, Sept. 15.
WSDOT needs help from travelers:
- Travel before or after work hours.
- Consider postponing discretionary trips.
- Add extra travel time to help prevent delays especially if you are traveling the morning of Sunday, Sept. 15
Exit 130 to South 56th Street and Exit 132 to South 38th Street/State Route 16 will remain open during the work.
The closures allow crews to make repairs to the roadway. During the morning of Sunday, Sept. 15, travelers may see little to no activity in the work zone as concrete is curing.

- Be kind – workers are out there helping to keep everyone safe and improve the roadways.
- Pay attention – both to workers directing traffic and to fellow travelers.
- Stay Calm – expect delays, leave early or take alternate routes if possible.
