Pierce County Planning and Public Works is tackling critical infrastructure improvements along Spanaway Loop Road South in 2024. These projects will help increase capacity in the public sewer system and improve the road surface for the traveling public.
In order to complete this work, road closures will be necessary on and around Spanaway Loop Road South in the Parkland/Spanaway area. Travelers can expect the following closures starting late July through the end of the year:
- 116th Street South near Spanaway Loop Road South will be closed starting Monday, July 29, through Saturday, August 10.
- Spanaway Loop Road South will be closed between 116th Street South and Garfield Street South starting August 12 through late October. During this time, brief closures of 116th Street South and Garfield Street South may be necessary near Spanaway Loop.
- In August during the above closure, Spanaway Loop Road South will also be closed between Garfield Street South and Military Road South for repaving.
- Garfield Street South between Spanaway Loop Road South and Ainsworth Avenue will be closed starting in late October through late December. Ainsworth Avenue at Garfield Street South will also be closed for approximately two weeks in mid-to-late December.
To view a map of the road closures, visit www.PierceCountyWa.gov/SpanawayLoopClosure. More specific dates and detour routes will also be provided on that webpage as soon as they are available. Road closures will be in place 24/7 during the work periods. Local access will remain available for emergency vehicles and residents.
Pierce County understands the impact these closures will have. Travelers are encouraged to plan alternate routes and adjust their travel schedules whenever possible.
The Spanaway Loop closure beginning in August is necessary to replace aging sewer pipeline located directly below Spanaway Loop Road South and Garfield Street South with new, larger pipes. This major sewer line, part of the Parkland/Brookdale Interceptor, is one of the largest sanitary sewer pipelines in the Pierce County network. It carries wastewater from large areas of east Pierce County to the Chambers Creek Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant in University Place. This project is the fourth of six phases to increase the capacity and extend the life of the Parkland/Brookdale Interceptor.
The existing pipeline is nearing the end of its lifespan due to corrosion and is expected to reach capacity in 2028, based on the size of the existing pipeline as well as development in the area increasing demands on capacity. The new pipeline will serve Pierce County for decades to come.
The repaving work that will be completed between Military Road South and 120th Street South is part of the 2024 Asphalt Overlay Program. This work involves resurfacing the existing pavement and upgrading existing curb ramps to meet ADA standards.
