The City of University Place has contracted with Pierce County to perform chipsealing in the areas indicated on this map during the week of July 22. The following week (Aug. 5-9) fog sealing will be applied to the newly chipsealed streets.
Chipsealing preserves the structural integrity of existing roadways by putting a layer of asphalt oil and rock over the existing road to seal the surface and provide a new wear surface. This prevents water from entering the base and causing deterioration, which prevents more extensive repairs/rebuilds. It is estimated that chipsealing can extend a roadway’s service life by seven to 10 years.
Fog sealing uses liquid asphalt to fill voids and make the roadway slightly smoother. It also tamps down loose rocks created by the chipseal. Please note that both of these processes require dry weather, so schedule adjustments may be necessary in case of rain.
Homes on the affected streets will receive door hangers with all the details, including parking and traffic restrictions. Chipseal is not applied to areas within a cul-de-sac because of the turning movements. Turning causes the material to loosen and the coating to fail.
