I graduated from high school in 1968.
The year before, 1967, Simon and Garfunkel wrote “At the Zoo.”
In all my years of education I don’t remember ever having gone to the zoo.
But on this past Friday, May 3, I went to the zoo with the kiddos from my very own Tillicum Elementary School where I attended in another lifetime.
They laughed, they sang “Wheels on the Bus” (many times), and they learned a lot at the zoo.
There’s much to be learned at the zoo.
It’s why Simon wrote “At the Zoo.”
He was addressing the negativity and cynicism of the people in New York City.
“It’s all happening at the zoo,” was an invitation to participate, that if you weren’t rolling up your sleeves, who were you?
It’s a message and a song any city and community should learn.
Hence my suggestion tonight as school board director for a motion that at the upcoming graduations, S&G’s song be played for the recessional.
Remember graduates:
End negativity and cynicism.
Participate.
