Starting Thursday, May 16, 2024 the Interlaaken Bridge will be reduced to one way traffic. This emergency closure is required due to recently discovered structural deficiencies. Traffic will only be allowed to drive one way on the bridge from east to west. This means traffic crossing the bridge to head toward Lakewood Towne Center is not allowed and must find alternate routes. The weight limit restrictions previously placed on the bridge remain in place. At this time we do not know how long this emergency configuration will be necessary.
We are working with our community partners like the school district and waste management, and our police and fire first responders, so they can plan accordingly and limit disruption to their operations.
The Interlaaken Bridge previously underwent construction to replace cracked beams roughly 14 years ago. The bridge structure and pilings itself are structurally sound. The beams that sit atop the caps of the pilings are what need to be replaced.
The city is reviewing its options for how to replace the old beams and will provide more information to the public once it is available.
The traffic configuration is below:

Does anyone know if boat traffic under the bridge has changed?
Mary M Raybell says
Deferred maintenance. This bridge should have had regular repairs and not allowed to get in this shape.
John Arbeeny says
Maybe a fraction of the money spent on unnecessary roundabouts all over the City should have been dedicated to maintaining the Interlaaken Bridge.

Ahhh, … love the commentary. Great to hear such expertise; didn’t know we had so many structural engineers, … knowledgeable and ever-ready to roll up their sleeves.

Ditto Bob!

I would love to see this turn into a pedestrian bridge. Would certainly reduce the amount of aggressive and reckless drivers on that road.
