Are you a regular Fort Steilacoom Park user? Next week the USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships will be held at the park.
This week long event will include 2,000 riders from across the country and is expected to draw up to 10,000 spectators on championship Sunday.
To accommodate the event parts of our 340-acre Fort Steilacoom Park will be off limits to the public. That includes the upper trail areas and some of the main parking areas.
The public will still have access to the park during the event, and are even encouraged to attend some of the races to cheer on the riders and see what Cyclocross is all about (hint: it involves a lot of mud!).
Here’s what you need to know for next week’s USA Cycling National Cyclocross Championship event:
The main road into the park will be accessible only to event goers — that means chances are where you normally park will be blocked off unless you pay the $20 event entrance fee (this one-time fee gets you into the event all week, including access to two beer gardens, coffee vendor and other event festivities).
The paved parking lot by the barn/dog park/entrance to Waughop Lake will be closed to the public, as will the parking lot by the playground and the one near the RC fly area. These areas will all be in use for the event. The RC fly area will reopen Dec. 17.
Free parking for park users will be available by the baseball fields along Steilacoom Boulevard and in a temporary parking lot at the southern entrance of the park near Angle Lane and Elwood Drive.
Park users will still have access to walk/run Waughop Lake, the dog park and playground, but will need to walk a little longer distance to reach these areas.
The course will be located along the upper trails of the park, and visitors are asked to please stay out of this area for your safety and the safety of the riders.
We thank everyone for your patience during this exciting event and wish the competitors good luck in their races next week!Print This Post
