LAKEWOOD – After the Thanksgiving holiday, contractor crews building a new 23-foot tall overpass that spans Interstate 5 in Lakewood have a series of overnight lane and ramp closures scheduled at the Thorne Lane interchange.
From Wednesday, Dec. 4 through Friday, Dec. 6, crews will install a total of 15 bridge girders on the overpass that spans the railroad, the existing southbound I-5 Thorne Lane off-and on-ramps, and all lanes of I-5. The first two nights of work will close the Thorne Lane off-and on-ramps. The third night will affect all lanes of I-5, bringing significant delays to overnight travelers.
Wednesday, Dec. 4
- Southbound I-5 exit to Thorne Lane and the Thorne Lane on-ramp to southbound I-5 will close from 9:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. Thursday.
Thursday, Dec. 5
- Southbound I-5 exit to Thorne Lane and the Thorne Lane on-ramp to southbound I-5 will close from 10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. Friday.
Friday, Dec. 6
- From 10:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6 to 5:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, both northbound and southbound I-5 will be reduced to a single lane at Thorne Lane and directed up and over the Thorne Lane off- and on- ramps.
During the Friday night work, travelers who use I-5 through Lakewood and Joint Base Lewis-McChord are advised to delay their trips or avoid the area. WSDOT anticipates that significant backups may occur during the work. Law enforcement will be in place to assist with moving traffic through the ramp intersections.
This is the second overpass being built at the Thorne Lane interchange as part of the I-5 – Steilacoom-DuPont Rd to Thorne Lane – Corridor Improvements project.
