Steilacoom Boulevard Project:

Bids for the Steilacoom Boulevard Project were opened on Thursday.  5 bids were received. The bids were provided to the Town’s engineering firm which is currently reviewing them for completeness and compliance with federal guidelines.  Staff is anticipating bringing a recommendation for award to Council at their March 5, 2019 meeting.

The Town is currently soliciting interested firms for construction management on this project (Request for Qualifications process).  This solicitation closes on March 14, 2019. Interviews will be conducted shortly thereafter.

Parking Space Available:

The Town owns and operates a parking facility on the corner of Union Avenue and Commercial Street near the Pierce County ferry terminal.  We lease parking spaces on a monthly basis for $125 and currently have one space available. If interested, please contact Paul Loveless at 253.983.2074.

Public Safety:

Region 5 Hazard Mitigation Plan Update:

Town staff in conjunction with Pierce County and other jurisdictions is in the process of updating the Region 5 Hazard Mitigation Plan.  FEMA requires the Council be notified that this process is underway because eventually the plan will come before the Council for approval.

Fraud Alerts:

Traditionally at this time of year and this year has been no exception, individuals will receive phone calls, emails, texts, etc. from individuals claiming to be from the IRS, Social Security, or even the utility company threatening dire consequences unless the individual provide them funds via gift card, credit, cash, etc.  These are scams. Most governmental agencies will never demand immediate payment especially not one utilizing a gift card. If you receive such a call, do not provide the individual any information, simply hang up.

Suspicious Activity:

If you observe suspicious activity, please contact Public Safety – non-emergency number – (253) 798-4721 as soon as possible. To anonymously report suspicious activity please email the Department at crimetips@ci.steilacoom.wa.us

Public Works:

Streets and Storm:

Crew Emphasis:

The crew focused on recovering and rehabilitating equipment from the recent storms; restocking supplies in preparation for any possible future events; swept roads and performed right of maintenance; repaired damaged traffic control signs; and performed other maintenance activities.

Electrical:

Crew Emphasis:

The crew trouble shot issues with the new commercial stove at the Community Center; reinstalled the crosswalk warning signs at the Puyallup Street curve; installed primary cable on First Street near Gove Street; performed repair and maintenance activities on the wayside horn on Union Avenue; and performed other system maintenance.

Water/Sewer:

Crew Emphasis:

The crew responded to a plugged sewer service in the 600 block of Second street caused by a contractor; inspected a new sewer service in the 500 block of Galloway Street; compiled information for the Gray and Osborne water system study; jetted sewers throughout the Town; and performed other systems’ maintenance.

Parks, Buildings and Grounds:

Crew Emphasis:

The crew installed a new bench at the corner of Hewitt Drive and Chinook Lane.  The prior bench was destroyed in a hit and run incident. Additionally, the crew continued recovery efforts from the storms.

Other:

Chorus and Chamber Orchestra:

Steilacoom Community Church will be hosting a large festival chorus and chamber orchestra for a very special performance of the Dan Forrest Requiem for the Living on April 19th Good Friday and we are looking for more singers!

The church choir is already about 35 singers strong and we are opening our doors to the greater Steilacoom Community for anyone who would like to join in this project!

This requiem differs from traditional settings in that instead of being a prayer for the dead, this one is a prayer of hope for those left behind, a very fitting setting in the context of Good Friday. This is going to be a very powerful evening that everyone involved will carry with them for a very long time!

The rehearsal commitment is not too intensive and does allow for some flexibility. There will be just four rehearsals from 1 PM – 4 PM on the following dates: 3/10, 3/24, 4/7, 4/14, along with one dress rehearsal on Thursday, April 18th from 7 PM – 9PM. The performance will be on Friday, April 19th at 7:00 PM. All rehearsals and the performance will be at Steilacoom Community Church.

Please reach out by phone or email if you would like to join us for this amazing event!

Hoops for Heroes

AUSA – DuPont Steilacoom Chapter’s 4th Annual Hoops for Heroes.  This year’s event will be held at the SHS gym on March 7th starting at 6:30 PM.
