TACOMA – Adverse weather conditions have delayed the onset of a long-term closure of the East L Street overpass in Tacoma. The closure was originally scheduled to begin this week.
Before the overpass can be closed, crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation have to create a temporary work zone and make pedestrian improvements along a detour route. Much of that work is weather sensitive, and is postponed due to snow and ice. WSDOT will announce the new East L Street closure date when it becomes available.
Once in place, the closure will be in effect until fall 2021, allowing crews to demolish and rebuild the overpass to accommodate a widened Interstate 5 and new HOV lanes.
Updated HOV construction information is available on TacomaTraffic.com. Before heading out the door, travelers can find the latest road conditions on the WSDOT app and by following the WSDOT regional Twitter feed.
