If you like musical theatre, or if you just like music, you are fortunate to live in the 20th/21st Century.
This is the era of Andrew Lloyd Webber, the composer who has brought to life the majority of the greatest musical productions in the past 50 years.
Born in 1948, Lloyd Webber had his first hit musical at the tender age of 20 with the 1968 staging of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” The prolific British composer’s body of work, thus far, has equaled that of American George M. Cohan and the team of Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein.
Some of Lloyd Webber’s notable works include: “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” “Starlight Express,” “Cats,” “Evita,” “School of Rock,” “The Phantom of the Opera.” “Sunset Boulevard,” “You Must Love Me,” “Aspects of Love” and “Jesus Christ Superstar.”
Almost every musical accolade has been heaped upon this musical genius. His awards, both as composer and producer, include seven Tony’s, seven Olivier’s, a Golden Globe, an Oscar, the Richard Rodgers Award for Excellence in Musical Theatre, the Kennedy Center Honor and a Grammy for Best Contemporary Classical Composition for Requiem. Lloyd Webber was knighted by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II in 1992 and created a life peer in 1997.
He is passionate about the importance of music in education; the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation has become one of Britain’s leading charities supporting the arts and music. In 2016 the Foundation funded a major new national initiative which endowed the American Theatre Wing with a $1.3 million, three-year grant to support theater education opportunities for underserved young people and public schools across the U.S.
