LAKEWOOD – On February 2, 2019, at approximately 10PM, a shooting occurred at the Texaco gas station located in the 12700 block of Bridgeport Way SW. The 46 year old male victim had a conversation with an 18 year old male suspect near a car in the parking lot about their gang affiliations. The victim walked away and the suspect pulled out a firearm. The suspect shot the victim seven times and fled in his vehicle. The victim survived the shooting, but did not know the identity of the suspect.
Lakewood Detectives were able to identify the shooter as Humberto Martinez-Avila and issued an officer safety and attempt to locate bulletin to area law enforcement that included a potential address in Parkland.
On February 11, 2019, a Lakewood Police Detective and Pierce County Sheriff’s Deputies located the vehicle used in the shooting at a trailer in the 1000 block of 137th Street South in Parkland. As additional LPD Officers were preparing to respond, Martinez-Avila attempted to drive away and then fled on foot when his car got stuck. Deputies gave chase with a K9 officer and he was taken into custody. He was turned over to Lakewood PD and was taken to an area hospital for treatment of his injuries from the K9 application. He was released February 12 and booked into the Pierce County Jail for Attempted Murder 2, Assault 1, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm and Drive-By Shooting.
Great work by Lakewood PD and the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department
