Steilacoom High School Instrumentalists Excel at Regional Competition

Steilacoom High School Band Director Matt Vegh took a talented group of students to the Washington Music Educators Association regional competition last weekend. 14 entries from the Steilacoom High School Band program competed for ratings and feedback from professional musicians.

These seven groups have earned the honor to perform and compete at the Washington State Solo and Ensemble Contest in late April. Congratulations to:

I (Superior) rating, which is the highest possible score:

  • ???Percussion Ensemble, “Mason and the Funky Bunch” (Destiny Austin, Wesley Froehle, Nathan Gehring, Mason Hajnal, James Hemenway, Sam Knoblich, Dylan McCown, Mitzumy Santiago-Ramos, and Eli Winchel)
  • Percussion Quartet, “Mallet Masters” (Mason Hajnal, Sam Knoblich, Dylan McCown, and Eli Winchel)
  • SHS Alto Saxophone Duet (Grace Lovell and Makayla Murphy)
  • SHS Trumpet Duet (William Forbes and Amelia Lovell)
  • William Forbes, French horn solo
  • Wesley Froehle, timpani solo
  • Grace Lovell, alto saxophone solo
  • Emily McGann, clarinet solo
  • Makayla Murphy, alto saxophone solo
  • Adelina Rodriguez, bass clarinet solo
  • Dylan Schou, clarinet solo

The following students earned II (Excellent) rating:

  • ?Holly Bullock, flute solo
  • Amelia Lovell, trumpet solo
  • John Salmon, oboe solo?

Four entries won their category and earned the chance to compete at the Washington State Solo and Ensemble Contest at the end of April. Congratulations to:
