Mrs. John Lathrop says
Will this be a juried selection?
John Arbeeny says
Another waste of tax payer money: $80,000 for that “art” work on Gravelly Lake and Washington Blvd. Since when do we depend upon government for art? How about sticking to what we have government for….like road maintenance. How many pot holes would have $80,000 filled? How many more with this waste of money? Could it be we are building monuments to celebrate current council members?
Carolyn Gordon says
I absolutely agree, John. I’d like to see an end to this wasteful practice. We don’t need art sculptures at Colonial Center. We need pot holes filled. We still need sidewalks along major roads. And we need to address the issue of homelessness before people freeze to death.
Sheri says
John – This has been a state program since 1974 where a certain portion of any entity that receives state funding must allocate 1/2 of 1% of construction costs to public art. Not to say I am not in agreement with you it is just that Lakewood doesn’t have a choice in the matter. I was in education for 14 years and couldn’t believe some of the works of public ‘art’ that were paid for out of our tax dollars.

$50,000. A dedicated funding stream via the rental fees for “City” days at the McGavick Conference Center was created in 2014 to provide resources for public art.
John Arbeeny says
A council that approved this wasteful expenditure can vote to repeal it. Wasting money, whether yours or other peoples, is still a waste.
