The DuPont Historical Society and Museum are pleased to host a Buffalo Soldier exhibit supported by the Tacoma Buffalo Soldier Museum Friends and The Fort Lewis Museum. This exhibit will be on display at the DuPont Historical Museum January through the month of March. An open House will be hosted on Sunday February 10, 2019 between the hours of 2:00 and 4:00. Exhibit appropriate for all ages.
In July 1904 the Buffalo Soldiers 9th Cavalry from Fort Walla Walla participated in maneuvers with the National Guards of Washington, Idaho, and Oregon at Camp Murray near American Lake. An encampment of about 2000 men, including the 9th Buffalo Soldiers, was set up on the banks of Sequalitchew Creek near the old Hudson’s Bay 1843 Fort Nisqually site in current day DuPont with approximately another 2000 soldiers encamped at Steilacoom Lake.
DuPont Historical Museum is located at 207 Barksdale Ave in Historic DuPont WA. Take exit 119 from I-5. DuPont Historical Museum is open Wednesday through Friday 10:00 to 4:00, Saturday and Sunday 1:00 to 4:00. Entry is free and exhibits set up for all ages. Call 253-964-2399 for more information.
