Superior Court Commissioner Meagan Foley retires

January 21, 2019 By Pierce County News

Pierce County Superior Court is announcing the retirement of Court Commissioner Meagan Foley from the bench after more than 30 years.  Commissioner Foley’s last day was Jan. 18, 2019.  She is a graduate of the University of Puget Sound School of Law where she earned a Juris Doctor degree.

Commissioner Foley began her career in August 1988 as one of four Court Commissioners.  Her first few rotations were as a Constitutional Commissioner at the County-City Building (CCB), but she did spend part of her first year at Remann Hall as the Family Court Commissioner.

There are now nine Court Commissioners for Pierce County; six civil commissioners and one criminal at the CCB and two commissioners at Remann Hall who handle civil and criminal matters.

For the past six years, Commissioner Foley has been the Criminal Court Commissioner, the longest serving Commissioner in that position.  She will be greatly missed by the criminal bar in particular, who have come to appreciate her professionalism, compassion and demeanor on the very challenging docket in CD2.

Before starting with the Pierce County Superior Court, Commissioner Foley was in private practice, focused primarily on Family Law.  Commissioner Foley is a long-time member of the Pierce County Criminal Justice Committee and was instrumental in the creation of the new Criminal Best Practices Manual.

Commissioner Foley will spend much of her retirement traveling and gardening.  She has a trip planned to Australia, New Zealand and Tahiti shortly after her last day.  Commissioner Foley said this about her retirement, “The realization is settling in that I will soon be entering a different… phase of my life.  I will always look back on my career and marvel at all of the wonderful and hard-working colleagues and staff, past and present, that I have had the privilege to work with, whether in the County-City Building, Remann Hall or Western State Hospital.”

Please join us in congratulating Commissioner Foley on her retirement from the Pierce County Superior Court bench.

Pierce County Superior Court is the second largest Superior Court in the State of Washington and is proud to serve the citizens and visitors of Pierce County.  The Court is staffed with 22 Judges and 9 Commissioners.  There are three sites where court is held; the County-City Building at 930 Tacoma Ave S., Tacoma, Remann Hall Juvenile Court at 5501 6th Ave., Tacoma, and Western State Hospital at 9601 Steilacoom Blvd. SW, Lakewood.  For more information, please visit our website at co.pierce.wa.us/superiorcourt.
