On January 13, 2019, at approximately 3:19AM, Lakewood Police Officers were dispatched to a suspicious circumstances call at an apartment in the 6400 block of 88th Street Court Southwest. The male caller told dispatch that there was an unknown person in his apartment armed with a knife. He described the male as a black male wearing a white shirt and blue jeans. The caller also stated that his father and brother were in the apartment, but unaware of what was going on.
While officers were en route, the caller told dispatch that the subject was now armed with a gun and a knife. As officers got closer, the caller told dispatch that the subject was in front of the door with the knife. Officers arrived and called out shots fired at approximately 3:31AM.
When officers arrived, a male subject charged at the officers with a knife. Three officers fired their weapons. The officers immediately rendered aid on the subject and requested the Fire Department priority. Unfortunately, the subject died at the scene.
The subject that charged at the officers turned out to be the 43 year old male caller that had been talking to dispatch. It is unknown at this time why the male called the police and later charged at the officers with a knife. The initial investigation shows that there was no other subject armed with a weapon in the apartment and it appears the caller had described himself in the description he gave of the suspect. The Cooperative Cities Crime Response Unit is on the scene, along with the Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office conducting an investigation.
The three officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave per department policy while the investigation is conducted. More information on the involved officers will be released in the next few days. This is all the information we have at this time that we can release. We will update the public when we’re able to release additional information.
