On Monday, January 14, 6:30pm, the Steilacoom Planning Commission will continue its consideration of small cell wireless facilities. The monthly meeting will be held at Town Hall, 1717 Lafayette St., Steilacoom.
Small cell, the next generation of 5G cellular technology is important to self-driving vehicles. However, it also requires more equipment and more antennae throughout town, mounted to street lamps rather than single, large cell towers currently utilized.
The impacts are not yet fully realized, but could affect view lines with equipment boxes and antennae mounted to numerous lamp posts across town and begin a snowball effect from all major carriers vying for space on the lamp posts. More info about small cell infrastructure is available here.
Little is known at this point about 5G technology and its potential health hazards. For years the cell companies have denied any effect from cell phones, but recent studies have recommended use of earphones or speaker phones when using cell phones, or at least keeping them away from the ear.
It’s important for the Planning Commission, which makes recommendations, and the Town Council, which votes on codes and ordinances, to hear public input on what this might mean and how it might affect the historical and scenic town of Steilacoom. Please consider attending these important meetings. They could impact your life in Steilacoom.
