Anti-Bullying Film Creating Change in Tacoma

August 26, 2016 By The Suburban Times

From the many and quite recent bullying related suicide reports from every part of the world, it has become quite clear that the connection between suicide and bullying is getting stronger. While bullying may seem like a minor and childish behavior to many, it has gradually risen into one of the leading causes of suicide and other very negative effects among teenagers. To put it more clearly, many victims of bullying are turning to suicide as the way out of the terror, humiliation and pain caused by bullies. Learn about the link between Bullying and Suicide!

Local film maker Gregory Marks and team have created an anti-bullying film called “Joenah”. In this film the main character Joenah is picked on by a few boys from the school’s swim team. Joenah doesn’t allow himself to become a victim instead he enters a community swim meet to race against the boys.

The community of Tacoma, Washington has come together to help create change with the help of the Local 23 Longshore Union (President Dean McGrath), Port of Tacoma (Tara Matina, Lou Paulsen, and Anthony Judie), Stadium High School Principal Kevin Ikeda, Assistant Principal Shannon Marshall, Fircrest Pool, and Europa Bistro. By providing locations, background actors and financial support helped to get this film completed.

This film was created to bring awareness to the growing problem of bullying and suicide due to bullying. Marks hopes that this film will spark the proper conversations with adults and students to help face this problem with posing positive outcomes. Marks has researched bullying for nearly two years to better understand how and why this is happening across the country.

“Bullying has been a long standing problem in the workplace, playgrounds, and schools,” said Gregory Marks. “I have been researching bullying for the last two years and the effects it has on adults and children. In my research I have found two main elements that seems to be evident in almost all cases, which is denial and lack of accountability.”

“It is my firm opinion that we are all responsible for ensuring that our children are protected at school and feel safe to express who they are without being ignored, ridiculed or harassed.” Gregory Marks

Bullying among young people will be less acceptable if it less frequent among so-called responsible adults, and if national figures weren’t surrounded by advisers who say things such as an opponent “must be brought to justice — arrested, tried, and executed for murder.” Family values seem to be ignored by too many ‘leaders’ this year.
