I am here to speak on behalf of those who cannot or are afraid to speak for themselves; the renters.
In a recent hearing, we heard a property owner called his renters ‘slobs’ no less than five times- tenants he screened & accepted rent checks from.
In Washington State, like a lot of states, once a lease is expired, you can evict renters for no cause at all; ask me how I know this. But unlike other states, if that eviction goes the distance, that eviction will be on their record for their entire life, making housing nearly impossible in their future.
This program will cost on average one dollar per unit per year. In return that tenant is assured if he moves to Lakewood, he will get safe housing. If a problem arises, YOU are assured of early intervention before damages get into hundreds or thousands of dollars.
Ultimately, I know I’m paying for that program. But it is a relief to us… the people who ultimately sign your rent checks.
