LAKEWOOD – Months before the tragic murders of police officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge members Christ Lutheran Church connected with the Lakewood Police Department to coordinate a BBQ for Lakewood’s finest.
“Last winter, Christ Lutheran hosted leaders from across our community to better learn the needs of our many service providers,” said Pastor Ralf Kalms. “One of the panelists was Assistant Chief John Unfred. From that event we put together this simple – and delicious – meal as a way to connect and say ‘Thank you’ to our police.”
Wednesday afternoon, more than 30 members of Christ Lutheran set up tables and BBQ grills and put on a feast that included ribs, chicken, beans, salads and desserts. As officers changed shifts and came back from training, they wandered through the feed line and filled their plates. Some, more than once.
A group of 15 – including five kids – took a tour of the police station, checked out police cruisers and tried on various safety gear.
“Taking time to say thank you, and simply visit with our police, has been a great way to spend a beautiful afternoon in Lakewood,” said Christ Lutheran member Corey Campbell.Print This Post
