Bruce Dammeier is the most qualified candidate for Pierce County Executive. While his opponents are truly decent people, Bruce is not a career politician. As a result, he has varied experience which makes him the best prepared to address the challenges of the job.
I know Bruce as a fellow Navy veteran who attended the United States Naval Academy and later received a Masters Degree in engineering. After serving as a Naval Officer both stateside and overseas he returned to his Pierce County roots to enter the business world and raise a family. Pierce County is the host to Joint Base Lewis McChord, the largest single point employer in the state. It needs a leader who understands the military and the special needs of military communities. Bruce has that quality.
I know Bruce as a dedicated advocate for the disadvantaged. We served together on the board (and as board chairs) of Goodwill of the Olympics and Rainier Region. Bruce worked to provide job training and placement to literally thousands of individuals with disabilities and disadvantages, always keeping in mind the difference between empowering and enabling. As a member of the same Rotary Club as Bruce, I joined others in collectively contributing countless hours tutoring students in some of Pierce County’s most challenged schools. It was Bruce who was leading that effort.
As the Mayor of Lakewood, I know Bruce from working with him in his role as a Washington State Senator. Anyone can say “No,” puff their chest and let problems fester. Just look at Congress. Bruce worked for real world solutions such as transportation improvements to Highway 167 and the I-5 JBLM Corridor that will mitigate lengthy commutes and improve freight mobility, facilitating commerce and giving Pierce County residents more time at home instead of in their cars. He also offered innovative solutions to more equitably funding our states’ schools which would actually have cut property taxes for many if not most Pierce County homeowners. I particularly like the fact that he is a co-owner of a business that has created well over 100 family wage jobs in my community.
Naval Officer. Engineer. Humanitarian. Businessman. Public Servant. Bruce Dammeier is clearly the most qualified candidate for Pierce County Executive.
