Electric powered model hydroplanes will be racing at Lake Waughop on Saturday as part of the Lakewood SummerFEST activities.
Two class sizes, 1/10 scale and 1/6 scale will be competing around buoys positioned in the lake. The 1/10 scale hydroplanes measure 36″ in length and the 1/6 scale hydroplanes measure 48″ in length. The top speed in both classes can exceed 50 mph. The boats are divided into two categories, Vintage and Modern. Boats in the Vintage Class feature a round nose design. Boats racing in the Modern Class feature a recessed or pickle fork front.
The sponsoring clubs are Electric Radio Control Unlimited for the 1/10 scale class and Electric Scale Unlimited for the 1/6 Scale Class. Ben Keller, retired Lakes High School Choir Director, will be entering both his 1/10 Scale and 1/6 Scale Hawaii Kai model hydroplanes. Jerry Dunlap, also a retired Clover Park School District teacher, will drive Ben’s 1/10 scale hydroplane. Racing will begin at 11:30.
