Alchemy Skateboarding is proud to host the 4th Annual Go Skate Tacoma Day event in honor of national Go Skateboarding Day. 1,000 community members from across the region are expected to gather for this unique, family-friendly, city-wide celebration.
Go Skate Tacoma takes place on Saturday, June 18, from 11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. in downtown Tacoma’s Tollefson Plaza. The event is free to attend; donations for Alchemy Skateboarding’s non-profit youth education program are welcome.
Go Skate Tacoma 2016 event highlights include: a variety of large ramps and skate-able features; skate competitions; free skateboarding lessons; open-skate opportunities for all; a children’s area with activities, games and treats; on-site shirt screen printing; helmet art led by the Children’s Museum of Tacoma (free helmets while supplies last only); and raffles with prizes donated by generous partners.
In partnership with UW Tacoma and the Puyallup Watershed Initiative, Alchemy Skateboarding and participants will transform the Prairie Line Trail into a skate-able pathway during the event. This will include several skate features along the trail and a longboard stopping clinic sponsored by DB Longboards.
Each year, Go Skate Tacoma strives to highlight one moment of change that is significant to the lives of youth skaters and the community at-large. In 2015, Alchemy Skateboarding worked with the City of Tacoma to remove the “No Skateboarding” sign from Tollefson Plaza, making it legal to skate the plaza year-round. This year, Alchemy will honor graduating seniors in a special ceremony at the end of the event.
Alchemy Skateboarding is grateful for the support and sponsorship of Skatelite, the Puyallup Watershed Initiative and the many champions of youth and community who make Go Skate Tacoma possible.
Historically, skateboarding has been pushed out of urban centers, away from the heart of the city, the doors of local business, and the eyes of the greater community. Go Skate Tacoma aims to bring this healthy activity to the forefront of our community and make it accessible to all, to encourage civic inclusion of marginalized youth and young adults, to cross socio-economic lines and to fuel the amazing spirit of Tacoma.
Alchemy Skateboarding is dedicated to empowering youth through educational and athletic programs, experiential learning opportunities, a safe drop-in facility and mentorship. Programs include: for-credit high school courses at SOTA and SAMI in the Tacoma School District, skateboarding camps and classes, a leadership training, and Tacoma’s only indoor skate facility, which opened in 2015 at the Grit City Grindhouse in downtown Tacoma. Alchemy uses a common
interest—skateboarding—to engage youth to realize to social, educational, vocational and personal development and success. Join Alchemy Skateboarding at Go Skate Tacoma 2016 to support a vision of a future in which youth and skateboarders are recognized as positive contributors and an integral part of the thriving, vibrant Tacoma community.
