TACOMA – Learn about Tacoma’s cultural and tribal history on an interactive walk through downtown led by Brandon Reynon, Puyallup Tribe archaeologist on Wednesday, June 1st. The free Walk Tacoma event, sponsored by US Bank, will take people on a 1.5 mile walking tour highlighting the region’s relationship with the Puyallup Tribe.
The one-hour walk, starting at noon, will begin and end at Tollefson Plaza (S. 17th St. & Pacific Ave.). Reynon will lead the group to several stops, including Frost Park and Fireman’s Park. Fireman’s Park boasts a stunning panoramic view of the Puyallup Tribe of Indian Reservation, where Reynon will provide information on tribal history in the area and answer questions.
The Walk Tacoma Series, sponsored by the Puyallup Watershed Initiative Active Transportation COI, is a seven event walking series held on the first Wednesday of the month, from April through October. The fun, themed walks, now in their seventh year, encourage people to enjoy downtown on foot by introducing new walking routes, and sharing information about the community and its history through the guided tours.
Last week, Downtown On the Go’s Walk Tacoma series was recognized by the Tacoma Landmarks Preservation Commission for an Outstanding Achievement Award for Urban Revitalization. The walks are adored by many, proven by their large attendance – the first walk of 2016 had approximately 250 participants.
In addition to learning about Tacoma’s history, the walks serve as an excellent opportunity for people to stretch their legs in the middle of, or at the end of, a long work day.
“Taking part in Downtown on the Go’s Walk series is a great way to break up the day and meet other civic-minded residents, students, and employees of Tacoma. It’s a fun way to learn about the history of our great city while burning some calories in the process”, explains Jonah Jensen, Senior Associate Architect at BLRB Architects.
Pick-up a Downtown On the Go punch card at the Cultural History walk and earn a DOTG t-shirt by attending three Downtown On the Go Walk, Bike or Transit events. Punch cards will be available at all Downtown On the Go Walk, Bike and Transit events.
Tollefson Plaza is accessible by many Pierce Transit routes and the Tacoma Link Light Rail. If you’re arriving by car, you can park at the Park Plaza parking garage at 1250 Pacific or at the Tacoma Dome Station and take the Link.Print This Post
