Westside Story – One Dozen Writers

Recently I had the opportunity to visit with Ms. Jan Rich and her writing class. It quickly became obvious to me that Jan is one of our community assets. She, with great dedication and love, manages a writer’s group that meets at our Lakewood Senior Activity Center located at 9112 Lakewood Drive SW, Lakewood, Washington 98499. T: 253-798-4177.

While the group is set up like a class, it also felt like a writers club. The class appears to be made up from a group of 12 eclectic personalities, interests and backgrounds. What brings this group together is their love of writing.

Class members are tasked with writing one or two pages which they bring to class each week. The author reads their piece aloud and then receives constructive comments, encouragement and inspiration from the other class members.

I thought it would be fun to publish some of their creative works,

Today we are publishing a work from Billie A. Stewart. Billie crafted her work so we can read it two different ways. #1. Her written piece titled, Thoughts on Thanksgiving can be read left to right or side to side. #2. Billie has also made it possible to read her work from top to bottom. She has a built an acronym which you can find by reading the first letter of each line. From top to bottom the acronym reads, I love Thanksgiving.

THOUGHTS ON THANKSGIVING

I think that I shall never see a poem
Lovely as family and friends gathered together
Over a wonderful Thanksgiving meal prepared by
Various ones with pleasing recipes, tried and true.
Everyone contributing their own favorites
To make for a delightful meal and for
Hours, the house filled with
Aromas pleasing to all who are present.
No one is missing, from this family gathering
Kids, grandkids, mom, dad and friends all, even gramma and gramps came to call.
Sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, gravy and dressing, turkey and cranberries
Garnish the table. Pumpkin pie, pecan pie, and apple cobbler for later
In the evening after the food has settled. Then everyone
Vying for space on the couch and chairs to watch football or movies on the
Internet or television
Never forgetting to thank
God for family, friends and a special Thanksgiving together again.
