TILLICUM – Thursday morning, at approximately 10:06 AM, a shooting occurred at the 15200 block of Grant Avenue SW in the Tillicum area of Lakewood. After the initial report of the shooting, we got a report of a male victim collapsed in his vehicle with gunshot wounds in the parking lot of the Popeye’s Restaurant located at the 15200 block of Union Avenue. It was later determined that the victim had been shot on Grant Avenue and drove himself to Popeye’s. The victim was rushed to a local hospital suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim’s condition is unknown.
Multiple police units responded to the area and contained a neighborhood west of Portland Avenue near Wadsworth where the suspect was last seen. As the suspect fled, he attempted to steal two cars at gunpoint, but was unsuccessful. SWAT teams, K9 teams, Police Officers, a marine unit and air units looked for the suspect until 3:30 PM, but he was not located. The suspect was described as a white male in his twenties wearing a dark colored hoody and blue shorts…with short hair. The suspect removed some of his clothing as he fled and was reported to possibly be only wearing shorts. It was reported that he was still armed as he fled.
The investigation revealed that the suspect arrived in a white van with government plates and abandoned the vehicle at the scene when he fled. The van belongs to the US Army and was checked out by an active duty soldier. That soldier was missing from the base and took a privately owned firearm with him.
The investigation is still active and ongoing. The motive for the shooting is unknown at this time. A reverse 911 message was sent to the Tilicum area residents informing them about the shooting and urging them to call 911 if they see the suspect. Residents have also been told to call 911 if they arrive home and discover signs of a break in.
