On October 31st, 56 adults and students participated in the first ever Lakewood Runs for Youth at Fort Steilacoom Park. In addition, 15 high school youth and 11 adults volunteered at the event. Many thanks to all who braved a wet and windy day to volunteer and/or run the 5K and 10K courses. Nick Johnson ran a blistering 17.05 for the first 5K (close to 5.5 minutes per mile) and led all 10K runners. To view pictures of the Run go the CISL Facebook page.
“CISL was honored to have Ellie Wilson—long-time board member and recent recipient of the Presidential Lifetime Service Award—Andie Gernon, Natalie Humphrey, Ann Kirk Davis and Janet Cox lead the runners to the starting line. These individuals were instrumental in launching Communities In Schools in the early 1990’s.
Students need to know that they have a community of support behind them; a community of people who believe in them and their ability to succeed. Support through events like Lakewood Runs for Youth helps to communicate that message,” noted Leah Livingston, CISL site coordinator at Clover Park High School. Leah has been very busy at the school providing support for 9th grade summer school, extended learning and mentoring while helping to provide tutors for the school’s AVID classes. Each day Leah is building relationships with students that allow them to receive one-on-one support.
Participants and sponsors listed below helped CISL to raise $3,200 which will continue the momentum to keep more high school students on track to graduate on time.
