“Where Did All the Kodachrome Go?” Todd Wolf, Owner of Robi’s Camera Center, will be at the October 1 meeting of Lakewood United.
The Lakewood United group meets at 7 AM every Thursday at Burs Restaurant, which is located at 6151 Steilacoom Boulevard SW in Lakewood. Upcoming topics are as follows:
- October 8, 2015 “Events Happening at Marymount” – Trudy Cofchin, Staff, Marymount Event Center
- October 15, 2015 “Multiple Sclerosis in the Pacific Northwest – A Personal Story” – Linda Moran, Attorney Emeritus, WA State Bar Association
The September 24, 2015 program, ”Do You Know What Your Computer is Up To? – Preventing Computer Fraud” featured Tom Wie, Retired US Army in Aviation. Tom trained in his second career with a Bachelor of Arts in Management of Information Systems from Saint Martin’s College, and a Certificate in Information Security from University of Washington, Tacoma. He became certified as a Novell Certified Network Engineer, and as a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer. In a very useful presentation, Tom, who owns Omnitek System Solutions in Steilacoom (www.omnitekwa.com) gave us some scary statistics about the tens of thousands of malware programs sent out on the Internet every day to infect huge numbers of computers. He said that the anti-virus programs that have a cost (as opposed to the free programs) are much more effective because they are updated every day for new threats, rather than only once every month for the free programs. One particularly ominous threat is “ransom ware” which encrypts the entire hard drive and in a pop up ad offers to de-encrypt your data, for a fee! By making frequent backups of all data, we can avoid falling victim to this ransoming of our own data. Tom highly recommends complete, frequent backups of all data, especially if this is done “on the cloud” like Carbonite which is a very secure subscription backup service.
