The date and topic of Lakewood United’s next meeting:
September 3, 2015 “What’s Happening with our Island Neighbors? – Asia Pacific Cultural Center” – Lua Pritchard, Executive Director (Karen – MC)
The Lakewood United group meets at 7 AM every Thursday at Burs Restaurant, which is located at 6151 Steilacoom Boulevard SW in Lakewood. Upcoming topics are as follows:
September 10, 2015 ”Military-Civilian Partnership” – Tiffany Speir, South Sound Military and Communities Partnership (Herb – MC)
September 17, 2015 “RP6 (Rally Point 6) – Partnership with the USO” – Tracy Peacock, Director of Resource Development, RP6 (Sue – MC)
The August 27, 2015, presentation, “Sound Transit Proposals – $15 Billion Package Pending” featured Eric Chipps, Senior Transportation Planner, with John as MC. The topic was “Sound Transit 3 Development” as opposed to Sound Transit 1 and 2, the previous plans. Planning has taken into account the higher projected population growth (by 2040) of the areas peripheral to Seattle: Tacoma 59%, Everett 74%, and Bellevue 33%, compared with only 28% in Seattle. Sound Transit consists of several components: Sounder Commuter Rail, Sound Transit Bus (as an interim measure only), Central Link light rail between Sea-Tac and West Lake center, and Tacoma Light Rail. Link Light Rail plans to reach by 2023 North to Lynnwood, East past Bellevue to Redmond, and South to Kent/Des Moines (and to Federal Way Transit Center if additional funding becomes available.) Sounder Commuter Rail has reached Lakewood under ST2, and plans in the future to reach Sumner, Puyallup, and DuPont. These last extensions will depend on whether the ST3 Ballot Measure of November 2016 is passed by the voters. There was a vigorous question and answer period. Thank you, Sound Transit, for a very refreshing look at our transportation future. Attendance was 35.
Many thanks are due to Burs Restaurant owner Tim Tveten who arranged a large upgrade in Wi-Fi capacity and computer guru support for Lakewood United’s use of the new Smart TV as a projector. Ultimately, a direct HDMI cable connection from our laptop computer to the Smart TV was arranged, and the High Definition format was premiered with the Mountain View Funeral Home video with excellent results. Thank you, Tim, for seeing this through to a great resolution!
