Since the early days of social media, Taryn Givenchy has taken advantage of the power and potential that it carries. She began her career working for a number of newspapers before moving on to public relations, and is now an entrepreneur who uses the power of social media to market her own business.
Three years ago, she also began teaching business and social media marketing courses at Pierce College, sharing the many insights she has gained over the years.
Givenchy is looking forward to helping the college launch a brand new one-year social media marketing certificate program this fall.
Read on for more information about what she enjoys about teaching at Pierce College:
Q: What inspired you to start teaching social media?
A: I’ve watched social media evolve, and I love that I’m able to teach about such an emerging field. By teaching social media, I’m able to stay current on the latest trends and how they’re working in the field.
Q: What is your teaching style like?
A: I work hard to help students understand the topics we discuss, and also apply that knowledge to their own lives and work. I hope after taking my classes that they are able to see the real world connection to what we learned. I try to make each class as practical as possible.
Q: What do you hope your students take away from your class?
A: After taking this series of classes in the social media marketing certificate program, I hope students feel that they have produced actual products they could bring to job interviews. I want each of them to not just understand the concepts, but I want them to truly have a talent for social media marketing.
Q: What advice do you have for new students starting up at Pierce this fall?
A: I would say that if you’re taking online or in-person classes, the key to being successful is simply to show up. For online courses especially, you have to truly commit and log in almost daily, if possible. If you’re struggling, don’t be afraid to contact your instructor and talk about it.
Q: What do you like the most about teaching at Pierce College?
A: I love that there is so much support and resources available for both students and professors here at Pierce College. I also love that the standards are so high for everyone.
More than anything, I enjoy seeing my students progress throughout the quarter. They may come in not knowing much about social media marketing, but by the end of the quarter, they will have created professional projects they will be able to talk about in job interviews.
I’m so excited about fall quarter and the new social media marketing certificate program. Students who start the program this fall will be finished in only a year!
