LAKEWOOD – Rose Bruce, MSN, RN, ACNS-BC, CCRN, a clinical nurse specialist at St. Clare Hospital, part of CHI Franciscan Health, has been awarded the Nurse Maven Award by the Battelle Healthcare Colloquium. The Colloquium annually honors one heart failure nurse in the country for their extraordinary contributions to patients, co-workers and the nursing profession.
Bruce is a clinical nurse specialist for St. Clare’s critical care unit who strived to address the gap between the evidence that supports treatments used in heart failure and day-to-day patient care. She facilitated processes that advance care planning and promote the effective delivery of care for heart failure patients through the coordination of a multidisciplinary team of health care providers and working with leaders throughout CHI Franciscan as well as St. Clare Hospital.
“Rose is certainly deserving of this recognition,” says Rosemary Peterson, MD, FACC, medical director for heart failure. “In addition to playing a vital role in last year’s Colloquium accreditation work, she exemplifies the kind of nursing leadership we want to provide to all our patients at CHI Franciscan Health. Rose is passionate, empathetic and committed to providing the highest quality of care to our heart failure patients.”
Heart failure is a chronic condition that when managed correctly can help people live healthier, more productive lives. When left untreated, it is accountable for one of the highest hospital readmission rates in the country. Since the development of heart failure-specific initiatives at St. Clare in mid-2014, the heart failure readmission rate has decreased from 21.4 percent in fiscal year 2012 to 10 percent in fiscal year 2014.
In 2014, CHI Franciscan earned the distinction of the being the first Accredited System for Heart Failure in the Northwest and St. Joseph Medical Center earned recognition as an Accredited Heart Failure Institute. St. Anthony Hospital, St. Clare Hospital, St. Elizabeth Hospital, St. Francis Hospital and Harrison Medical Center all became Accredited Heart Failure Centers.
The Battelle Healthcare Colloquium’s primary focus has been to improve heart failure treatment through accreditation services, quality and process improvement, training, coaching and community outreach.
