The Pierce College Business Department has been a real life-changer for me. Before I started at Pierce, I was out of steady work for three years, raising my son as a single, newly divorced parent. I was very depressed and looking to sharpen my skills since a permanent job did not appear to be on the horizon. I previously earned an Associate of Arts degree in English, but had long since forgotten my value and purpose in life.
The day I arrived on the Pierce College campus, I was transferred around to many different people before ultimately landing in the office of Professor Linda Saarela. I was exhausted, frustrated, a ball of tears, and willing to just give up entirely on any kind of new degree endeavor. But Professor Saarela was genuine, personable, and offered me the hope I was looking for even in what felt like my darkest hour.
Because of my original degree, I was able circumvent a few courses and really pick and choose which classes interested me at Pierce College. I wanted a degree in business management with an emphasis on entrepreneurship and social media.
I have been a jewelry designer for 20 years, and was looking for ways to make that business flourish online. While earning my degree, I was able to learn all the ins and outs of the online world. I was also able to gain a great deal of relevant public speaking and marketing experience, which have been highly effective for me to refresh and learn.
I spent 12 months of my two-year degree under Professor Taryn Givenchy, learning how to market myself online, create and operate three styles of blogs, develop a presence on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and much more. I learned how to make a website more user friendly to the viewer, and the importance of placing objects in a pleasing fashion for an optimal web experience for the viewer. I learned who my target market was for each website and customized my online presence to suit their needs. I also learned many technical skills, like embedding video clips, sound bites, and Podcasts into my marketing presentations, websites and blogs.
All the techniques I learned in the social media marketing classes not only make me more well-rounded as a social media specialist, but they also make an impact on profit margins in a big way. After consistently earning 3.5-4.0 plus grades in the Business Department: Doctor Gearhardt, Professor Givenchy, Professor Saarela, and Professor Phoenix all personally recommended me to take an internship with a full-service commercial real estate brokerage firm as a Public Relations Social Media Specialist.
After the first week of my internship, the owner said that he planned on hiring me after my 90-hour internship was over. I am proud to say that I am now a real employee of Coldwell Banker Commercial Offenbecher.
I am working every day in my dream job as a Public Relations Social Media Specialist, using the skills that Pierce College has sharpened for me. I would not be where I am today without the help and knowledge bestowed upon me by the Business Department at Pierce. My time at Pierce has been amazing and a total life-changer.
The Pierce College Social Media Marketing Certificate program is a one-year, full online program designed to help students gain the knowledge, skills and abilities employers are looking for in online marketing specialists. For more information about the program, please visit bit.ly/1CaFhQD.
