Proposed language in DuPont’s 2015 Draft Comprehensive Plan is alarming. It has the potential to change our small town atmosphere.
Current DuPont Municipal Code, Chapter 16.05.010 states: “All commercial vehicles, with or without trailers, having a gross vehicle weight in excess of 14,000 pounds shall be prohibited on Center Drive from its intersection on McNeil Street to its intersection on Palisade Boulevard. (Ord. 97-582 § 1).”
Proposed language in the 2015 Draft Comprehensive Plan changes that. It would allow trucks in excess of 14,000 pounds, think tractor trailers with railroad containers, to travel the entire length of Center Drive which would dissect our community; cut it in half.
Center Drive is our main road in DuPont. It is the main road for our residents. We bike, walk, run and drive along Center Drive. We utilize it to get to our schools, Civic Center, parks, trails and to our small businesses. Currently, it is a pleasant tree lined street on which to walk, run or bike. It fits our “hometown sense of community”.
Commercial Vehicles, weighting 14,000 lbs should continue to use the DuPont Steilacoom Road. They do not provide a benefit to our citizens or to the quality of life for our small town.
The last public hearing for the 2015 Draft Comprehensive Plan will be held, Monday, August 10 at 7:00pm in City Hall. I urge all DuPont residents to attend, to listen and learn and voice your concerns about this and other potential changes that may affect our quality of life.
