Pierce County has a desperate need for foster families. Each night there are children sitting in the Tacoma office waiting for placement. On Monday there were eight children, on Tuesday six children ranging from age 2-14 years still without a place to rest their head at 10 pm.
My family lives in Puyallup and have been foster parents – as well as a Fostering Together recruiter and liaison – for almost seven years welcoming over 90 children into our home, but we have never seen it as bad as it right now.
We also run a Nonprofit clothing bank (The Wishing Well Foundation) in Tacoma/Puyallup area and see firsthand that amount of children that are entering the system.
My goal is to let the community know that this problem exists and encourage families that we need them now more than ever to step up and consider opening their homes to these amazing children. It hurts to know that our foster youth are being traumatized further as they sit for hours on end in the Tacoma office waiting for a safe place to lay their head, if only for a night.
