Debbie Cafazzo, a reporter for the Tacoma News Tribune will discuss, “Coverage of Lakewood” at the June 4 meeting of Lakewood United.
The Lakewood United group meets at 7 AM every Thursday at Burs Restaurant, which is located at 6151 Steilacoom Boulevard SW in Lakewood. Upcoming topics are as follows:
June 11, 2015 “Lakewood Police: Update by New Interim Chief Mike Zaro
June 18, 2015 “Nisqually Tribe History”
May 28, 2015, presentation, “62nd Airlift Wing – Mission to Antarctica” was introduced by Colonel Andy Hird, Operations Group Commander, and presented by Lieutenant Colonel Rob Schmidt, Commander, C-17 Antarctic Operations. LTC Schmidt reviewed the history of the scientific missions to Antarctica, starting with the International Geophysical Year in 1957-1958. The US’s McMurdo Station became the logistical center of operations, and the US Air Force was tasked to provide a large part of the air resupply to McMurdo (called “Operation Deep Freeze”) and various foreign scientific centers, especially New Zealand’s Scott Base, which is about 2 miles away from McMurdo. The other logistical support is provided by ice breakers and cargo ships which cannot traverse the area much of the year. The C-17’s must fly from McChord to Hawaii to New Zealand to McMurdo and back. LTC Schmidt showed very inspirational photos of the air approach to McMurdo Station, and other parts of the long trip. We
are proud that such an important logistical pathway is managed at our very own McChord Field! This was a thrilling presentation to observe. Many thanks to COL Hird and LTC Schmidt and McChord Field. Attendance was 30.
