It’s been years since the old School Bell at Custer Elementary (originally the Little Red Schoolhouse) off Phillips Rd. in Lakewood) rang, but on May 1, a handful of former students took part in the completion of Eagle Scout Evan Casaas’ project of restoring the old school bell.
With the help of the Clover Park School District maintenance office, and fellow scouts from Troop 221, Casaa worked 8 months on the project, from proposal to approval to unveiling. He built a small frame, resembling the old schoolhouse to house the bell. The bell is on display inside Custer Elementary School. The 300-lb. bell required four men to lift it onto its new platform. Former Little Red Schoolhouse student Jeannette Hurlow did the honors of ringing the re-furbished bell
