“The WOODS of LakeWOOD” will be the topic of discussion at the April 23 meeting of Lakewood United.
The Lakewood United group meets at 7 AM every Thursday at Burs Restaurant, which is located at 6151 Steilacoom Boulevard SW in Lakewood. The next 2 Thursday programs are as follows:
April 30, 2015 “Lakewood Industrial Park” – Tim Puryear (Marie – MC)
May 7, 2015 “Becky Newton, EDFP, Economic Development Manager,” City of Lakewood (Karen – MC)
The April 16, 2015, program “Fall Prevention for Seniors” featured Captain Jeff Colquhoun, West Pierce Fire Department, with Kris as MC. Kris asked that during the self-introductions we provide anecdotes of our own experiences with falls in members of our families, and quite a variety of experiences came to light. Captain Jeff Colquhoun has had many years of experience with both Seattle and West Pierce Fire Departments; in addition he has had job experience as a fire department mechanic. He presented a PowerPoint summarizing prevention and management of home fires and falls. The history and use of smoke detectors was covered, as well as what West Pierce Fire can do to inspect and set up smoke detectors. When calling 911, use of a land line gives superior geographic information compared to cellular phones. The best ways to prevent and to contain quickly any kitchen fire was covered. The simple expedient of having a lid handy for each pan was emphasized. In case of a house fire, calling 911 should be an equal priority along with safe evacuation; all occupants should assemble at the front of the house where the street address applies. This simple rule lowers the risk of rescue personnel having to enter the house to find a person who is not truly missing. The increase in falls causing injury in the over-65 population was summarized, and some steps were suggested to prevent falls. The use of a special lockbox with a key for fire rescue personnel’s use can expedite entry to a home with persons of high risk of falling. Jeff answered questions throughout the presentation, and always gave multiple colorful anecdotes to illustrate the presentation details. Thank you, Jeff and Kris for a very entertaining and worthwhile presentation. Attendance was 30.
