LAKEWOOD – The Association of Washington School Principals (AWSP) recently announced that Tyee Park Elementary Principal Taj Jensen has been selected as the Washington State Elementary Principal of the Year. Jensen began working in Clover Park School District (CPSD) in 2009 as principal of Tillicum Elementary School. He became the principal of Tyee Park Elementary School in July 2014.
“Under Taj’s leadership, Tillicum was named a School of Distinction for two years in a row and in 2014 received the Title I, Part A award, the only school in Pierce County to receive the award,” said CPSD superintendent Debbie LeBeau. “We are very proud of Taj and his staff and this recognition is well deserved.”
The selection process started last September when Jensen was nominated as a distinguished principal from the Pierce Region of Washington. Jensen competed with 18 regional winners and was selected by a team of 10 principals from across the state as one of three finalists. The team visited Tyee Park and Tillicum Elementary Schools as well as visited the schools of the two other finalists. They interviewed staff, parents and students at each of the finalist’s schools.
“Taj is described as having a sharp focus on student success and as a truly collaborative leader who has a passion for all students,” said AWSP director of governmental relations Jerry Bender.
In October 2015, AWSP will send Jensen and a guest on an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C. where he will be recognized along with the other state elementary principals of the year.
