University Place, Wash. – On Thursday, March 12th, the US Coast Guard and West Pierce Fire & Rescue will be working together for training purposes at Cirque Park in University Place and Sunnyside Beach in Steilacoom. The training will consist of utilizing the Coast Guard’s basket and transporting patients properly, specifically during water incidents. This training was rescheduled from January 2015 due to inclement weather.
The Coast Guard’s helicopter is scheduled to land in Cirque Park, located at Cirque Drive W and Bridgeport Way W in University Place, at 10:30am. This will be an educational training for West Pierce Fire & Rescue firefighters to work on communications and operations, should the two agencies need to work together on a real incident.
After the training is completed, West Pierce’s fire boat, the Endeavor, will be launched and taken to Sunnyside Beach in Steilacoom. There the two agencies will practice lowering and raising the basket into the Coast Guard’s helicopter. No live patients will be used in this exercise.
Weather or other unforeseen changes may change the plan for this training or require it to be canceled. Updates will be available that morning should something change. The media is invited to attend at either location.
