Constance Hosannah, a Charles Wright Academy Junior from University Place, is organizing an awareness event scheduled for Friday, May 30 (6-8 pm) at the Donn Laughlin Theater in the Language and Performing Arts Center on the Charles Wright Academy campus. The event is being held to support victims of obstetric fistula and to support the fistula foundation and will include a short 15 minute advocacy video and a panel discussion from professionals working with the issue. There is no charge to attend.
From Constance: “What is fistula? Women with fistula are sometimes raped, but more often are just victims of what’s called obstructed labor. Obstructed labor occurs when a baby can not leave it’s mother’s womb for whatever reason. Fistula is it’s result. Without a C-section, the baby’s body grinds and grinds against the pelvis/ and pelvic organs, creating a lack of blood flow between two organs in the pelvic cavity. The tissue in the area of pressure dies and a hole, or fistula, forms. The baby dies and comes out in parts and pieces and the mother is left leaking urine and or feces uncontrollably. So all in all, this woman will leak for the rest of her life if she doesn’t get surgery to fix it, she loses her baby, and her family abandons her.
Not only do I care about these women, but I want to convince others that they should care as well. The more people I can get at the event, the better. The event will be good for students because there will be a panel of trained medical professionals present to engage in a Q and A session about fistula, and there is also going to be a short documentary shown entitled ” Love, Labor, Loss”, and depicts the lives of African women living with obstetric fistula.”
Multicare is sponsoring the event and Menchie’s of Gig Harbor is providing free Fro-Yo. There will be snacks at the start and end of the event.
