UW Tacoma Announces Health Care Track in MBA Program

April 28, 2014 By The Suburban Times

TACOMA — A new series of courses at UW Tacoma’s Milgard School of Business will pave the way for medical professionals to advance their careers with an MBA concentration in health care leadership.

Beginning in fall 2014, the Milgard School will offer the new Health Care Concentration, a series of six elective classes. The concentration is designed for people in health care careers who want to earn an MBA specific to their field.

“This is a great option for anyone who is already in the health care industry or wants to find a job in health care leadership,” says Eugene Sivadas, director of the MBA program at the Milgard School. “Students in this program will earn an MBA with extra knowledge of the health care industry.”

Students who wish to earn an MBA with a health care concentration will take the same core curriculum as all MBA students, but will choose from health care-related courses to fulfill their summer elective requirements. The courses will focus on health care policy, information systems, finance, economics, marketing and epidemiology, topics that will give MBA students an edge in the health care field. Like all Milgard MBA courses, classes in the health care concentration are scheduled on evenings and weekends to accommodate working professionals.

Sivadas hopes to enroll at least 10 students in the first cohort and begin offering the electives in summer quarter of 2015. The elective classes will also be open to any MBA student who is interested in the subject.

“There are so many health care organizations within the greater Tacoma region, and we’ve had many students from those areas,” Sivadas says. “They’ve all benefitted from MBA training, but we weren’t able to offer them any specific courses to advance their knowledge in the industry. Now we can cater to the needs of that community.”

The Milgard School is now accepting applications for Autumn 2014. Learn more about the MBA program and the health care concentration at www.tacoma.uw.edu/milgard-school-business/master-business-administration.
