As US taxpayers were burning the midnight oil on April 14—and likely April 15 as well, students from Lakes, Steilacoom and Harrison Prep Schools were cracking the books in preparation for the yearly SHSD/CPSD Battle of the Books.
Lakes High School is the winner of the 2014 Clover Park + Steilacoom District Battle of the Books: High School Level. Mann Middle School earned first place in the recent Middle School competition.
Steilacoom High School was the runner-up, and Harrison Prep came in third, said Teri Litt, SHSD Librarian. The teams each answered 50 questions based on ten books, selected by school librarians, including student requests.
Questions in this year’s event were based on the following books, Divergent, Ready Player One, Between Shades of Gray (World War 11/Lithuania), Silence of Murder, The Running Dream, Raisin in the Sun, Modoc, Cinder , Daughter of Smoke and Bone, and Bomb: The Race to Build-and steal- the World’s most dangerous weapon
The list of books, Litt said, was a mix of two non-fiction, a play and historical fiction, realistic fiction, mystery, fantasy, science fiction!
The Lakes team was a power house, consistently answering correctly, taking and maintaining the lead almost exclusively for the second half, ultimately winning by only 16 points, the equivalent of answering only three more questions correctly than the competitors, Litt explained.
The contest was incredibly close at half-time: a tie for first with the second place team only two points behind, she added.
“Thanks to the Lakewood Library for hosting the event this year. Lakes will display the plaque for the year ahead, but the competition will be fierce next year if they plan to defend their title.”
Thanks, also to Steilacoom Friends of the Library for providing refreshments.
Now that Tax Time is over…what are you reading?
